On April 10th 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton, England on her maiden voyage to New York City. The Titanic was the largest and most luxurious ship of her time. She was billed as “unsinkable” and was thought to be the safest ship ever built. The Titanic was equipped with the latest safety features, including 16 watertight compartments that were designed to keep the ship afloat even if two of them were flooded. Despite these safety features, the Titanic tragically sunk on April 15th 1912 after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Over 1500 people lost their lives in the disaster, making it one of the deadliest maritime tragedies in history.
