Jimmy Carter is one of America's most controversial presidents, but he's still alive and his wife, Rosalynn, is by his side.

Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924. He was the first U.S. president to be born in a hospital. His parents, Lillian and James Earl Carter Sr., were farmers who owned a peanut warehouse. His father also served as a county sheriff and state senator.

Carter was a bright student and skipped two grades in elementary school. He was captain of his high school's basketball team and also played football and baseball. After high school, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated with honors in 1946.

Carter's military career was cut short when he was diagnosed with diabetes. He returned to Georgia and took over his family's farm. In 1953, he married Rosalynn Smith. The couple had three sons: John William (Jack), James Earl III (Chip), and Donnel Jeffrey (Jeff).

Carter became increasingly involved in politics and served two terms in the Georgia state senate. In 1970, he ran for governor but was defeated. He ran again in 1974 and was successful. As governor, Carter pushed for civil rights and education reform. He also pardoned all Vietnam War draft evaders.

In 1976, Carter ran for president as a Democrat. He was initially considered a long shot, but he won the election by promising to never lie to the American people.

Carter's presidency was marked by several major accomplishments, including the Panama Canal Treaty, the Camp David Accords, and the SALT II arms control agreement with the Soviet Union. He also oversaw the energy crisis and the Iranian hostage situation.

However, Carter's popularity began to decline after he failed to deliver on his promise to reduce inflation. His approval rating sank even lower after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and the U.S. hostages were taken in Iran.

In 1980, Carter ran for re-election but was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan. After leaving office, Carter returned to Georgia and founded the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization that works to promote human rights.

Carter has also been active in Habitat for Humanity, an organization that builds homes for the poor. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the Carter Center.

At 94, Carter is the oldest living former U.S. president. He has outlived all of his contemporaries and is now the longest-lived president in American history. He recently announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer, but he remains active and is still by his wife's side.
